Roster Update! California School of Fine Arts
We’re excited to share a major update to the Atelier 17 roster!
Recently, we visited the archives for the San Francisco Art Institute Foundation + Archive (@SFAI_Legacy). In 1940, 1948, and 1960, Stanley William Hayter taught courses in printmaking at the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA), the forerunner to SFAI.
Reviewing the enrollment records, we can now add over thirty names to the list of artists who learned printmaking from Hayter. Some will not be a surprise, as biographical information long associated them with Hayter, while others are entirely new.
Hayter had a longstanding relationship with CSFA. His wife Helen Phillips had attended CSFA before visiting to Paris in 1936, and she also taught courses in sculpture at CSFA in 1948 and 1960.
We are grateful to archivist Jeff Gunderson for his help and Audrey Storm, who visited the archive on behalf of the @atelier17project.
