End-of-Year Update
Dear friends,
As the year comes to an end, we wanted to highlight some of the progress we have made towards supporting new research about Atelier 17 and promoting awareness of the studio’s upcoming centennial in 2027.
Since our organization became a registered charity in March 2024 (only nine months ago!), our outreach has reached new audiences through our website and Instagram account.
We are proud to share three major accomplishments that will guide our work in the year ahead:
Oral History Project: The IFPDA Foundation awarded us a $4,000 grant to conduct oral history interviews with living members of Atelier 17. We look forward to beginning those interviews in early 2025. If you are a former member, please reach out if you would like to be involved!
Artist Roster: We are constantly updating the roster of artists who were members of Atelier 17. We began with a list of 709, based on Joann Moser’s 1977 publication. The current roster stands at 954! Recently, we visited the archives for the San Francisco Art Institute Foundation + Legacy and found 36 artists who studied with Stanley William Hayter at the California School of Fine Arts in 1940, 1948, and 1960.
Centennial Publication: We are working towards the goal of publishing a multi-author catalogue to honor Atelier 17’s centennial. It has been a pleasure to connect with colleagues from around the world who are working on interesting facets of Atelier 17’s history, its legacy, and affiliated artists! In September, we hosted a virtual conference featuring 20 research papers from scholars working from Taiwan to Toruń. While this conference was private and only open to presenters, we hope some of this research will seed our planned centennial publication.
We can use your support. Contributions will assist with targeted research (i.e., to expand and update Atelier 17’s roster) and publication costs for the centennial publication (author’s fees, printing, editing, image rights, and permissions). You may donate online or, if you prefer, mail a check. All contributions are tax deductible.
